I have done a number of plaques since I started with my laser. So far I have not attempted to get anything other than complete burn-off of of the paint ( in other words the plate is either black where it has not been
lasered or gold where it has been).

Can you do anything with partial burn of the plate through gray scale manipulation? I have not screwed up any of the plates yet to give me a plate to try this on.

yes, you can use gray scale including photos on any coated material. You need to find the settings where totally black parts of the artwork will completely remove the coating while the white parts of the artwork remove nothing, the rest in between.

Joe,

Do you have a good photo of how gray scale looks on a painted brass plaque?

You need to convert the pic to greyscale and then to black and white and then laser it.
Search for "alternatives to photograv" , I posted a method of doing this.

It will appear to have a screen. Less if you use a darker gray more if you use a lighter gray.
