I got this really nice box elder blank that was only about 2" thick, so I decided to use SMC Member Bob Hamilton's method for "backwards coring" of bowls. He advises to slow the lathe way down, but the problem is that with my piece of junk lathe, the torque isn't very good at low speed. So I ended up completing the coring cut on the scroll saw with the table at an angle. I also experimented with the shape. I saw someone do this kind of concave bowl a couple weeks ago, and I think it looks pretty cool.

This wood cut really well, and most of the tearout was easily sanded out.

8x4.5". Box Elder w/ maple/birch band. Sanded to 600, couple coats of Minwax Wipe-on Poly.

What pretty wood. What a great idea too. I didn't see that idea on here, so I'm glad you did that. I've come across some nice yet thinner pieces that would work great with. And, I too might use my RBI scroll saw the way you did.

Nice Bowl, do more of them so I can learn more. ;)

Here's (http://bobhamswwing.com/Articles/Coring%20Backwards/Coring%20Backwards.htm) the article I saw. Thinner boards would probably work well with the dovetail bowl method (http://bobhamswwing.com/Articles/economy/TRUE%20ECONOMY.htm), if you have a router table/ correct equipment.

Looks good, Ben! That is a gorgeous piece of wood. Too nice to have most of it wind up as a pile of shavings on the floor. :) Glad you tried it!
