View Full Version : Where to find knurled stud as on infill lever cap?

Sometime back I saw an article in shopnotes on making a wooden hand plane using a Hock/Krenove iron. Instead of a simple wedge, they made an infill-style lever cap of wood with a knurled stud screw for tightening the lever cap. I'm currently building a Krenov and would like to make that style lever cap/wedge, can anyone tell me where I can find the infill-type stud?

Thanks!

James,

The guys that make infills will often have custom-knurled lever screws. The lever cap itself is tapped and threaded to take the screw. Also, Derek has made one and explains how somewhere on these pages.

But what you can do is go here (sorry I can't link you to the exact page),

http://www.mcmaster.com/

and look under the general heading of fasteners, and find 'thumbscrew'. Click on thumbscrews, and go through the menus, picking 'knurled' ones. The infill makers typically use a 3/8" diameter, I think, to give you a benchmark. Incidentally, these screws can generate tremendous pressure--something to think about with the wooden lever. After you find the thumbscrew you like, look again under fasteners for 'threaded inserts'. You can tap your wooden lever cap to take the threaded insert that fits the thumbscrew you've selected.

Why not make your own? No tools required!
