Scott,
Congrats on the lathe. I think you will love it.
The Tool Nut is pretty close to where I live and I buy most of my stuff from them. I have yet to be disappointed. They have just about anything you could want at that store. It is kind of overwhelming to go in there at times.

Thanks I am sure I will enjoy it I have drooled over it for over a year now each time I went into Woodcraft.

Good to know Tool Nut is a legit businees and All items bought will be included, always afraid of big item online purchases, if they shipped just the 18" bed and not the bed with the tool rest extension what would you do?

I made myself clear several times exactly what I expected to be buying, even had them send me a faxed invoice so I was sure.

Can't wait for it to arrive.:D

I gotta say.. being who's son he is, for $120 I would have gone with Osolnik. But congrats none-the-less.

I gave him the last opportunity to meet Tool Nuts price and said if he did , I'd buy it from him right then and there. For a $120.00 differance he said to go buy it there.

$120.00 saved is $120.00 saved in my book. I wasn't buying Rudes personal lathe as a keepsake.

Did not matter were it came from to me, so long as its NEW and not some kind of a "second" and the company was Legit. I heard good about both places, just so happens this time Tool Nut had the better deal for me.

Now if it was $120.00 and they were LOCAL to me that would have worked. But no one local could come close with the added Il. tax.
I'm happy with my deal.( be even more happy once it arrives and I see it is the correct order and no damage) :D

WOW This IS going to be a L O N G week and a half WAIT!

I'll also need to have some electrical work done too but won't have that started until it arrives. I have 220 in the Garage/Shop thats hard wired run to my air compressor.

But I may need to upgrade my electical box out there as its full, plus I want to run a seperate circut for a dedicated light over it and a seperate circut for my DC.

So that will be a wait until my buddy can come on over and do that.

I'll feel better once it's here and put together sitting in the shop. I can build a shelf or see if the wire closet shelves I made for the Jet 1442 can be used.

It's only been about 24Hrs. since I placed my order and i'm already Jonesing for it to get here! LOL

you are going to love it .mine is sooooo smooooooth and quite with 0 vibration.
small ornaments with long thin stems are so easy to do with this thing.
and swinging a big chunk is just fun.
i have had mine since july 07 , i won a woodcraft gift card( from Gershner tool box in dayton) in june and waited 6 weeks for the 10% off sale at woodcraft .
so i could do the week and a half standing on my head, just kidding it will be a long week and a half . but the powermatic is worth the wait.

Thanks Tim,
I knew I was going to upgrade for at least the last year, once I started finding free wood and wanted to not waste any of it by cutting it up smaller to make it fit a smaller lathe.

The GOLD 3520B luckily for me is the best bang for the buck in it's class and then some. And within my budget.

A used Stubby across the Country from me was still $4,800.00, I'm pretty much still a newbie turner and just couldn't justify its cost plus travelling to go get it and bring it back home. I watch Tim Yoder turn on his each week though.

I turned on the BIG Oneway as I was invited to another forum posters home to try his. His Oneway was all decked out with most if not all the optiones it could fit on it.

I believe he said he had over $6,000.00 into it.

A SWEET machine but again out of my price range for a part time hobbiest.

I was setting up my little flatwork shop at home in the garage and oneday turned a pen at Rockler during an in store Demo, that was it I was hooked wanting to just turn some pens and small items like bottle stoppers ect.

I went home dug out the old Delta 1460 lathe I had sitting for about 15 years and never touched, I got it from my father in law. It has the jackshaft, plus almost every accessory that was available back in the 1940's.:D

I got it semi cleaned up and ran back to Rockler and bought pen kits mandrels pen blanks and turned about a dozen pens as Christmas gifts that year. They were a hit.

I bought a Jet mini on Ebay that was located locally it was the older blueish green Jet color but wasnt used much .

Quickly I bought another Delta off Ebay for the VS got it real cheap, turns out the reeves drive on that model was clunky.

Grabbed a Jet 1236 and its Reeves drive purrrrs like a kitten, but then 1 week later a Jet 1442 came my way so I bought it and have been using it, Jet makes a Fine lathe.

I picked up another old Delta an 11" swing DDL from 1955 just for a couple accessories that it had that my 1460 did not.

All came with various accessories chisels wood turning blanks kits you name it.
Plus all the while being the tool Junkie that I am I spent plenty of time in Rockler and Woodcraft buying blanks and amassing a large amount of turning tools , I think i'm up to 9 chucks Oneways and Teknatools, 2 of the Hold Fast vacuum systems a 220 Gast vacuum pump, I bought the McNaughtons coring system just bought the Don Pencil Scorpion( the Stinger should arrive tomorrow according to UPS tracking, FINALLY!) I was buying tools I knew I couldnt really use with my Jet 1442 knowing it was just a matter of time before I pulled the Trigger on a much larger lathe.

I even grabbed a TITON chuck from the Lee Valley clearance in preperation for the big upgrade I knew was coming.

I have more Tools than experience, but that will now come as I do already have all the extra goodies. And now with the 3520B I can try just about any type of turning I want.

I got hurt at work in 05 so inbetween I have had surgery trying to fix up my arm, so I had plenty of time to shop.
And that I did.

I KNOW, the lathe does NOT make you a better turner only Practice Practice Practice will. I'm just one of those type guys(get it from my Father) who has to have the right tool for the job, even before the job.lol

Except for keeping a nice supply of wood around, I pretty much have any type turning tool i'll need or at least most of the bigger ticket accessory items are already bought and paid for. So I'll start concentrating on my actual Turning Technique.

And getting to the clubs meetings more often, I joined a small club, "The Windy City Woodturners":D

The 3520B seemed a good fit overall for me, I slide the headstock down to the end on the 1442 and it helps as a Left handed turner. And alot less leaning over the bed to see and get the cuts right.

I have plenty to do before it gets here so that should keep me from goin crazy.

Hi Kurt,
I'll keep that in mind if I should run into any troubles.
And thanks , I looked at all my options and believe the 3520B will keep me happy for a long long time.

Hi John,
Thanks thats good to know, hard plunking 3 G's down to someplace across the country, then just sit back and wait, and hope they placed the order right and your getting exactly what you paid for, even getting it at the best price you still want that order to be right.
If there is any problems it's good to know we have an insider that can check into things. Thanks.

Hi Charles,
My plan has been in the works for close to 2 years as I knew I was going to want that one last bigger lather that will do anything I want. (where have I heard that one before?)

I do think this will be my last lathe upgrade for many many years, I thought long and hard about it , should I invest 4 5 6 grand, and always came back to the Powermatic feeling it will do what I want and need.

Last year I used my tax money to get a new HDTV bigscreen as I wasn't ready to commit quite yet. I was still debating with myself and reading everything I could on forums all over the place, talking to local turners ect.

I just never heard anyone say they wish they never bought the 3520, and always heard good things about their Customer Service.
So I decided it was time . And don't think I will ever regret it.

Keep saving you'll get there.;)

Why not post them here for others who may be getting this lathe, or at least submit them to mustardmonster dot googlepages dot com. I for one hope to be adding one of these to my shop in the near future.

Cheers,
James

You know Scott,
A better lathe doesn't make a better turner. However when you remove some of the shortcomings some other machines have it will allow you to focus on toll control and presentation more.
The first time I saw the PM in person was at the Tool Nut. The quality of the castings and the fit and finish rival ANY other lathe I've seen. For about half of the cost of other machines in it's class it is a steal.

I know that all to well John, only thing thats now gonna make me a better turner is to get out in the shop every day Practicing.
This is my 7th lathe, I bought all my others used all for good deals most with alot of extras.
I may have rushed my upgrades but know what I want to do, and now was my window of opportunity to get the GOLD Powermatic 3520B.
It was NOW or possible never.
This was about 2 years in the making even though I did not get out into the shop turning nearly enough.
I did collect all the tools needed, that take a large lathe to use and now I have the lathe on the way too.

Now its Practice Practice Practice and hope I build my skills.
I will have NO excuse otherwise now.

http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelloweek.gif I just called WMH Tool Group with my Confirmation # just to make SURE Tool Nut placed my order correctly making SURE I was to recieve the 18" bed extension and the tool rest support parts.

Everything sounded like it was Exactly as I wanted.

Plus the man I talked to said MY Lathe was being put on the truck TONIGHT in Tennesse ready to ship! http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowbiggrin.gif

He couldn't tell me when I could expect it and transferred me to the shipping dept. told me to leave a voice mail for Christina and she'd call me in the morning with any info she has. http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowbiggrin.gif

So, at this point how long do you think it will be before actually getting here?

Those that have one might have a clue. http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowyes.gif
