Like title says what would be a good finish?

What kind of wood?

I am a big fan of oil finishes for revealing the natural beauty and grain of woods. For napkins, I suspect a poly top coat for sealing purposes.

The species of wood would be useful information, but typically, I'd use oil followed by shellac. (the spray bomb of Zinsser shellac is fast and easy for things like this) Alternatively, any wipe on varnish will be easy to apply and give nice results. (There is no need to use anything containing polyurethane unless it's a floor)

Holder was made out of oak, and I too was going to go the oil route. Jim you say Shellac as a sealeris good?
