I have a 4 x 36 stationary belt sander and have been trying to sand some projects flat . I even tried to sand some 2'' round turning on the bottom so that they would sit flat . NO luck. ? How is this done ?
It seems to me that each tool I own can do many things, if I spent more time with them .thanks, keith

I have yet to see a belt sander that I would call accurate. They tend to remove lots of material in a somewhat uneven fashion. Even if you have some kind of jig to hold your work at a 90 degree angle a bit of belt slop will wear down the leading edge quicker and try to round off the edge a bit. If you hand hold the work the problem may be worse. It sounds like you may be using the wrong tool. Sometimes I'll put a piece of adhesive sandpaper on top of my tablesaw and slowly hand sand something.

Get close with the belt then step over to the flat surface (your tablesaw, bandsaw, torsion box, kitchen counter) that you have a piece of sandpaper stuck to and finish it off.
