Here is a couple of my sons (12yr) work. These are some Purple Hearts he did. One with costume band. He also heated up the purple heart barrels after turning to bring out a darker color. The lighter effect on this first one is where he decided not to make as dark in some areas.

Very nice pens Josh. I'm curious, how did you "heat" the purpleheart to get it darker? Very cool idea.

Jon,
They look great! My son is 5 and wants to do every thing I do. I've let him sand just a little on the lathe. I can't wait until he is old enough to turn on his own.

Wow! Looks great. When I heat up purpleheart, I just hold a scrunched up paper towel next to the blank and apply pressure for a few seconds. It heats up pretty fast, and you have to be careful not to set the towel on fire.

Heat Gun, moving up and down until you get desired effect. Let it cool before you try finishing :o
