I'm building some utilitarian cabinets to hold 132 three-ring notebooks for a large choir. I'm going to need about six sheets worth of 3/16 or 1/4 panels to insert in dados for dividers. The cabinets will be finished with clear satin poly and I was planning to use 3/16 hardboard (unfinished)for the dividers. However, I can only find hardboard that's "finished" on one side-the other side is rough. Does anyone have any idea of a sheet stock I could use as is without finishing? That's going to be a bunch of small panels (or large sheets) to finish in my small shop. Thanks for the help

on occasion, I can still find the masonite hardboard finished on both sides.

if you cant find that, how about 1/4" mdf ?

1/4 plywood is available prefinished and is usually about 7/32".

1/4 melamine is actually a 1/4" but works well.

1/4" MDF would work but would require some finish of some kind.

Probably would be faster to prefinish some 1/4" birch with clear and cut to size. Thats how I do almost all my cabinet parts. If you spray it is fast and easy.

Short of laying up your own panels with vertical grade laminate (probably more work and cost than you want) I can't think of much else.

What about using two pieces of 1/8" hardboard back to back?
