Today it rained and rained and rained....continuously.....sometimes so hard that you couldn't see the neighborhood looking out the window!

All morning and all afternoon....then about 5:45 P.M. it stopped and.....the most beautiful and brilliant rainbow appeared!!

In the pictures you can see a second rainbow which is probably just the reflection of the first.
The colors were so vivid (especially where it came through the trees) that they would almost hurt your eyes to look at them....The pictures do not capture their bright, almost neon effect.

It was so sharp and clear that it appeared the pot-o-gold would be just on the other side of the trees.........:D

God sure knows how to make up for a dreary, rainy day!!;)

Great pictures! The "second" arc you see on a rainbow is called the supernumerary arc (http://books.google.com/books?id=16YlNTZytvIC&pg=PA10&lpg=PA10&dq=supernumerary+arc&source=web&ots=Mp0DByyEwJ&sig=vSMg9wY7t8Jy0gHEP7AhS-7d7Ns&hl=en). Note that the colors are reversed in the supernumerary arc, and it's lighter than the primary arc. The band between the two arcs is called "Alexander's dark band (http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/atmos/ligsky.html)" named after a Greek and not the music guy.

Thanks for the informative links,Mike

I stared at the beauty of the colors for awhile and never noticed that they were reversed in the supernumerary arc.......Cool!!

Very close - here's a complete description (with pictures) of double rainbows, reflected rainbows, and supernumerary arcs - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow.

Cool rainbow pics! After it rains, I really like how the air is so clean and clear. Doesn't happen that much here in the Southwest.
