Hi,
I man gave me this burl around 4 months ago. It is a rhododenron burl from the stump of the bush. He had tried to burn it with no luck so when he found out that I used burls he told me to come by his house and pick it up. It had been burned and in the wheather for more than 4 years. I only have two coats of Deft on right now. I will be putting many more on this week. I am not showing the back side since it needs a lot of finish to cover up some of the decay that had started to distroy this beautiful chunk of wood. I will post more pictures when it is done. The bowl is 8" in dia. and 4 3/4" tall.

It looks beautiful to me! You achived a really nice height and form, and it's some really nice wood, too! To think that was headed for the fire!

Awesome piece Jack!! I never new that bush could have such a large root ball. And the wood is just so different. I love it. I may have to start making midnight runs in some of the neighborhoods;)

Thanks everyone,
One can find these burls if you look right at the ground where the bush's stump is. It will be just out of the ground enough to see the top. Here is bowl that one of my 10 grade students just finished. You can see the pin burl in it better. I teach high school shop and my love of the lathe has made it a very important part of what I teach. We have a small high school of 90 students, but our small shop now has five lathes including a 3520B thanks to donations from local community groups including the local AAW club.

Wood does not get much better than that nor does the workmanship.
