branch from a box elder cut down a couple years ago. It was in my fireplace woodpile (before I got a lathe) and headed for the fireplace last night. Branch was about 3 ft long and about 3 inches across and pretty gnarly looking. I decided to check it out before burning it. One cut with the bandsaw and I knew it wasn't going into the fireplace. Got about 20 blanks to make pens like this.

That's some awfully pretty wood, and a really nice pen. Good save!

Nice. Good call on checking it out.

When I saw your topic
Saved from the fireplace I immediately thought of Brian May and The Red Special (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Special).

That makes YOU a TRUE Wood Turner.

Never let a piece burn until it's time........................................and that is usually........................................... .....NEVER.

Great lookin' pen.

Rick, this wood is superb.
I imagine you are just thinking of all the nice wood you burnt prior to have a lathe....
But don't freeze during this winter or change heating system, you must hesitate every time you throw a log in the fire place.
