I'm getting tired of sandpaper that only lasts a few minutes. Have any of you found a SP you think is a "cut" above the rest?

The best sandpaper I use is from drum sander belts. If their not burned up when you replace them they work great even after they are used. I believe it is alluminum oxide sandpaper?

I use Mirka.

I've been pretty happy with the Klingspor paper too, but the paper life pretty much depends on the paper weight. I'm pretty sure they're graded from A to D (lightest to heaviest). The A paper from pretty much anybody wont last very long.

I like 3M products. I use 300D 5" discs I like the cloth backing. And the 3M purple belts in the belt sanders. They're also good for a widebelt, but supposedly paper back is the way to go for fine sanding on widebelt sanders. I don't know why, heat maybe?

I use Supergrit as a SP supplier; good quality, price and fast shipping.

I have an important question what sander are you using?

If it removes the sanded dust efficenly and has the correct motion it should be ok.

For example my dewalt hooked up to a vac to clear the dust the paper lasted much longet than not hooked up to a vac.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to make a list of these and try em all over time if I can find them locally. Mostly I'm looking for hand sand paper. If possible, I'll try to do some side by side as well. I'll get back to you. Thanks again.

I use Microplane - stainless steel sanding discs when I have a lot to do. They are marketed as 5x faster and lasting 7x longer than sandpaper. I've only been using my 3 piece sample pack for about 5 months and I'm sold on them. However, for real fine finishes I do use sandpaper.

When I first used one of their course disks I did have some problems with my variable speed ROS and did get some swirls.

I have been using thin paper from the BORG:eek:. It is pretty well junk.

It seems to tear, especially when I am working around corners, edges etc.

What paper/cloth can I use on my 1/4 sheet orbital sanders that will not tear?

I like these little Dewalt sanders - any suggestions on paper?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob, on my 1/4 sheet sander I use surplus Klingspor belts.

You can often find them at suppliers, they are belts that had a problem and were scrapped before they were joined into a loop.

They're very inexpensive, and produce a lot of squares for a 1/4 sheet sander.

The backing is heavy and the abrasive is very long lasting.........Rod.

I like the better grade of 3M. Cuts rings around most brand X. I can usually skip grits. Just wish I could find it in all the formats I use.

Norton 3X. You can get it just about anywhere and actually lasts. I use it on my 5" ROS, my belt / disc combo, and all my sanding blocks. Can't go wrong with it.

I've been happy with Norton 3x, though the only other thing I've tried is the Gator Grit junk you buy from the home centers.
