Those look gorgeous Dan. How did you prop them up for the photos?

You've got a couple of winners there Dan, my favorite is the BEB.

Really nice! I espcially like the blue swirl!

I believe that the technique for standing them up was explained a while back. My understanding is that you take a paper clip and bend it out, and secure it underneath the background of your photo tent, with the straight part sticking out. Then you remove the refill of the pen, put it back together, and stick it on the little paper clip.

Outstanding work!
The Buckeye is my favorite out of this pair.

Very nice indeed. What is your finish of choice for both the wood and acrylic???

Thanks everyone! Ben has it right for the pen prop. After breaking the clip loose when changing backdrop, I drilled a small hole in the board, and stuck the clip through the bottom, which should prevent that from happening again.

Finish on the buckeye burl pen is Enduro, a waterbourne lacquer system available from Beartooth Woods, consisting of sanding sealer and high gloss top coat. It's made by General Finishes, but is only sold by the gallon. BW repackages for penmakers in smaller containers. Both dry within minutes, but should be allowed to cure overnight before sanding, and the general feeling is that the topcoat should cure for about a week before sanding and buffing. I only waited a day however, and it came out fine. I guess if you wait a few more days, you get the N'th degree of shine. I guess I'll try that next time. More can be learned over at IAP, International Association of Pen Turners. Just search "Enduro". While you are at it, do the same for Unaxol, another promising finish.

The acrylic pen received no finish, just wet sand 320 - 600, then buff with tripoli, white diamond, and Ren wax.
