I haven't been posting much but reading every day and wanted to show a pic of a coffee table top I just finished. It is 30x60 and is a 4 piece match of veneer. Steve

The finish is a catalyzed lacquer.
Bobby, a good forum for veneering is vacupress.com. they have a good forum for questions. It isn't real active but any questions are answered in a timely manner and usually by Darryl Kiehl the owner.
Veneering can be done without a vacuum bag but is much easier with (for the most part).
Thanks for the compliments. Steve

Beautiful work Steve.

Couple of questions. It looks like you edge banded your substrate before the veneering process. True? Also, what did you use for a substrate? Thanks. Dave.

Beautiful work Steve.

Actually I edgebanded after it was veneered. I used fiddleback white sycamore veneer for the edgeband and applied it with a band clamp and pva glue.I used it because I happened to have some and thought it would look good. It did.
the substrate is 1" mdf
The panels were some that I had already veneered. Sometimes I will lay-up veneer into panels if i know how I will use it. I will flip every other leaf so I am able to bookmatch them when I put them together. I'll do this if the veneer is especially fragile or prome to buckling, as this was.
I just had to cut them to size glue together and shape into the oval.

Steve, that is simply Beeeee-utiful! You've done a great job with the veneer. I need to get my butt in gear with my own press soon and your post is helping with that initiative! Thanks for the pic!

Damn, that is some nice figure and nicely layed out as well. Would love to see more of it and hear your thoughts for the base. A nice dark wood seems appropriate to me...walnut? :D
