Spalted white birch 7 ½” x 4 1/8” and sanded to 400 grit. It was then removed from the lathe and dyed with a blend of Ritz ‘Crimson Red’ and DNA. Placed back on the lathe it was lightly sanded and then hollowed. Several coats of thinned Minwax wipe-on poly was used to achieve the high gloss look I was after. Cracks were left as-is for effect.

Steve,

Of all the HF's you have shown us here I like this form the best. However the coloring is not to my liking.

Steve,

It's really nice. I like the color. I like the contrast between the deeper red areas and the lighter, more natural, areas. Good job.

Oh yeah , I really like that Steve , form , color , finish is SPOT on. How long did you soak it? and how much dye did you use per fl oz of DNA? I really like the color.Gotta love that Minwax wipe on poly....

Whoa!!! That finish is such that I could probably do a detailed drawing of your photo booth from those pictures! Steve, this is a particularly pleasing form and the color......actually seems appropriate! I would be interested in a few details of your process too.

Extraordinary piece.

Question: I've used Ritz dye before but mixed it with water and the results were disappointing. Sounds like you mixed it with DNA and it worked beautifully. Is that the secret to Ritz dyes? ....Ron

Red is my least favorite color, but that even makes red look good. That's beautiful and I like the shiney finish.

Steve - that is beautiful - I absolutely love the color!

Thanks everyone! I do appreciate all the kind words! I know the color is fairly intense and I wasn't real sure it would work!

For those of you interested in the dye process - all I did was pour about a teaspoon full of the powdered dye into a small margarine container and added around 3 tablespoons of DNA. Mixed it up for a couple of minutes with a coffee stir stick but found most of it never dissolved. Oh – I made sure to wear some latex gloves - just in case! The dye was applied with a 1" foam brush on the outside of the form only – the inside was left natural. I kept applying the dye until I had an even color - then wiped it down. About 10 minutes later I had it back on the lathe and gave it a light sanding just to remove some of the raised grain and also to remove a little of the color so you could see the spalt and grain patterns.

Steve I love that color. The form and finish are only things I can aspire to. Mind if I try the color on a few of my birch bowls?
Thanks for sharing you work.

The dye thing worked out pretty well. It seems a great way to use some of that plain white hardwood that we see so much of up here. :):):)

Wow!! Steve, I step away for a few days and come back to this! Where in the world do you find the time? Man, you are jumping by leaps and bounds. Very impressive.Never would've thought of Ritz dyes. Form is spot on, finish is top notch along with the photography of it. And color, not my favorite but it still does the piece justice.!!

I'm not normally a fan of added color, but I really like this one! The form, the curve, the FINISH - right on the money!
You have made me want to try adding color again.
