"Making and Modifying Woodworking Tools" by Jim Kingshott - good information on making inlay planes. May no longer be available.
"Making Traditional Wooden Planes" by John M. Whelan
"How to Make Wooden Planes" by David G. Perch and Leonard G. Lee
"The Wooden Plane - It's History, Form, and Function" by John M. Whelan
"Wooden Planes and How to Make Them" by David G. Perch and Robert S. Lee - duplicates lots of what's in "How to Make Wooden Planes"
"The Making of Tools" by Alexande G Weygers - I don't remember if planes are in this or not.
"The Handplane Book" by garrett Hack
"Making and Mastering Wooden Planes" by David Finck

There's a few more but I don't remember them now.

Mike,

In addition to the books that Mike and the others have suggested, get the DVD's and video tapes also. Clark & Williams have got a couple ('Making Traditional Side Escapement Planes by Larry Williams), and Todd Herrli has one on making rounds & hollows. Larry and Todd are two of the top modern-day gurus.

I'll add an additional recommendation for David Finck's Making & Mastering Wood Planes (Revised Edition). This will not only show you how to make a Krenov style plane, but will also provide valuable information on other hand tools, sharpening and most importantly--how to actually use it.

I was just looking at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Making-Mastering-Planes-David-Finck/dp/0806961635/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204224178&sr=1-2), Barnes & Noble (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Making-and-Mastering-Wood-Planes/David-Finck/e/9781402720222/?itm=2), and Lee Valley (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=52680&cat=1,46096,46107) it looks like this book may be out of print now. If you have a decent used book store in the area like Half Price Books, you may want to check there.

When you go to make a Krenov style plane, you'll need a plane iron and chip breaker to go with it. Hock Tools (http://www.hocktools.com/products.htm#PI) sells both the iron and chip breaker together just for these type of planes. Also at the Hock site, they sell a plane kit (http://www.hocktools.com/kf175.htm) for making a Krenov style plane. I've not used the kit myself, but it looks like a great way to get started as it includes everything you need, including the iron and chip breaker. Even if you're not interested in the kit, you may want to watch their video (available on the same page for the kit), which will give you some ideas about what's involved in making these types of planes.

It's a slippery slippery slope. Next you'll be building a forge and tempering your own blades.

i would gladly spend the rest of my life in a shop where i could work with every material known to man. (within reason)

im just trying to master wood at the moment and maybe a little metal here and there. but, yes, i could easily sinkhole myself on metalworking and numerous other things in a heartbeat!

now to just streamline what ive got and get to work.

Craftsman studio sells the Hock-made Krenov iron & chipbreaker for a little less than Hock does. Just ordered a 2".

That's a nice looking plane Dan. But don't be too intimidated by it. It's really not that hard to make a plane like that. You would want to start with something simpler but it will not be long before you will be up for more complex planes. And the one pictured in the link would be a good "target" because it does not involve complex dovetail joinery of the metals or anything else you could not accomplish with "basic tools and skills", just cutting and fitting. Go for it....
