Looking at Grizzly's site gets to be complicated to say the least . . . .

MODEL G0453Z 15" PLANER w/SPIRAL CUTTERHEAD

&

MODEL G1021X2 15" EXTREME SERIES PLANER w/SPIRAL CUTTERHEAD

Which one is better and why . . . :-)

Help! ! ! !

When I bought my 1021x, I asked the same question. At that time the 453 wasnt available with the spiral cutter. The president of Grizzly responded and answered a couple of questions for me. Here is the thread:

Some things I saw.

The cheaper has a larger diameter head, 6 more cutters, weighs more, has a larger table area with wings, has a larger max width of cut, taller max cut height, includes a built in roller/caster system, and IMO looks nicer. All that plus $100 cheaper.

Also in reference to lances linked post, The X1 must have been different....
The X2 is made in China
Switch is in the same place on both.

The X2 is made in China

Based on that alone, I would buy the 1021X, it was made in Taiwan. The 1021X is still available as clearance.

Steven, as I said in your other thread, I've been seriously looking to upgrade my planer. I looked at both the 453 and the 1021. Here's what I was told by customer service are the significant differences:

Max cutting width: 453 = 15" / 1021 = 14 7/8"

Max cutting height: 453 = 8" / 1021 = 6 1/8"

Feed rate: 453 = 16 & 30 / 1021 = 16 & 20

Bed length (w/ extensions): 453 = 42 1/8" / 1021 = 51 1/8"

Amps: 453 = 15 / 1021 = 18 (both are 3 HP motors)

Weight: 453 = 661 pounds / 581 pounds

The 453 has a built-in mobile base, the 1021 doesn't.

The 463 has serrated feed rollers, the 1021 are spiral serrated.

The 453 uses a 3" spiral head with 74, 14 mm inserts (replacement inserts are $24.95/10).

The 1021 uses a 2 7/8" spiral head with 68, 15 mm inserts (replacement inserts are $59.95/10).

Be well,

Doc

EDIT: The differences for the 1021X1 over the 1021X2 is country of origin and the cutter head.

Don... you edited your post about the x2 having a Byrd head. If you look at the photos in the Griz catalog, It appears that the x2 indeed does have a Byrd head. Its a black head with the cutters fairly in a straight line like a Byrd. If you look at the 453z, the head is silver, like the Grizzly head on my 1021x. So, the x2 is made in China with a Byrd head and the 453z is made in China with the Grizzly head. The 1021x is made in Taiwan with the Grizzly head. There have been threads about the differences between the Grizzly and the Byrd head and most people seem to think they are equal. The main difference I see between the Grizzly head and the Byrd head is the cost of the replacement cutters.

Lance, I went back to look at the size of the cutters and pulled up an e-mail from Griz CS. I initially posted it was the Byrd head, but the e-mail I have says it comes with the Griz spiral head??? The photo looks like one, but since I can't positively confirm I edited it out and only listed the size.

Be well,
