I was hoping if anyone has some sample pictures or know where I can find some plans for creating an Urn (some type of box to hold ashes). I am a novice but have most all tools. I unfortunately I lost my 13 year old best friend and company of the pet kind Nika my Siberian Husky Saturday. I would love to build an urn to keep her ashes. She was one of a kind pet. Very loyal, playfull, and her personality was incredable. She will be very missed and impossible to replace. I would like to give her a resting place worthy enough for her. Thanks you very much for you help.

Peter

This website sells handcrafted wooden urns. Maybe you could browse their selection and find something that you could duplicate.

They even have a special section for pet urns, but right now that link doesn't seem to work for me.

Also, they sell plans for a couple of different styles:

And I'm very sorry for your loss. I know it must be very hard to lose a beloved pet after that many years. I think it's really great that you want to make your own urn as a memorial. It is a very fitting tribute.

Sorry to about your loss. Your idea sounds like a wonderful way to remember Nika.

I've been curious about doing something similar, both for pets and possibly people, but I've not actually done any myself. I did a little research on this awhile back, and one of the things I remember, at least where it pertains to people, was there may be certain legal requirements in how these things are made. I don't know if that pertains to pet urns or not. In particular I think they have to seal up by way of screws or fasteners for health reasons. The wooden style urns I have actually seen, typically seem to be a box type affair with an open bottom and its sealed with a base, and screws run up through the bottom of the base into the sides of the box.

I would imagine that if you're going to transfer the cremains from whatever container you get to your own urn you can make it any way that you like. But if you are going to have the crematory transfer them directly, you may have to follow whatever the laws/guidelines are for these things.

You should probably talk to whomever is handling this for you and find out if they have any requirements for the urn.

Peter,

I've made quite a few for pets and humans also. go to my website and take a look, it will give you soome ideas. On mine I have entry though the bottom with a screwed piece of birch plywood and the rest is just a box, however you would like to make it. I do rabbit the bottom for the lid.
