View Full Version : Large Saw Sharpening

A friend was showing me an old saw he has and asked if I knew about sharpening and tuning hand saws. I do know a little something about this, but only with the type of teeth that are typically found on a back saw. What my friend has appears to be one of the large one-man type cross cut saws used for taking down trees. The teeth, on my friend's saw, look similar to the Champion tooth pattern or Lance tooth pattern shown in the image below.

I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to some online resources that discuss how these types of teeth are sharpened and set? I've done a bit of looking myself, but I'm only finding the normal stuff about hand saws with regular teeth.

Thanks.

Leonard Lee has directions for sharpening large saws in his book on sharpening, if I remember correctly.

Judging by that image you've probably already found it, but this (http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/fspubs/77712508/toc.htm) might help.

I just happen to have a saw that requires some attention, and old Shurley & Dietrich. Is that what is sometimes called web pattern teeth, because I have a saw set that is made especially for web pattern teeth.

Hi Alf nice seeing you here.

seems no one locally is schooled in sharpening those old two man saws, as I have the necessary tools I get called upon to do them. Now its seems the few farmers with buzz saws have found out I can deepen the gullets and sharpen buzz saw blades as well.

Easier than hand saws.

That's exactly what I was hoping to find. I found the image on Wikipeida, but didn't find the site you've referenced when I was initially searching.

Thanks!
