I haven't been turning any pens, wood bowls or much of any wood lately. I have been working in stone....soapstone, calcite and alabaster. what you see is my latest in White Italian Alabaster. the base is purple heart, It stands about 4 in. tall and about 6 in. at the bowl base.

Do you like it?

Laurie,

That's wonderful! Do you mind sharing where you get your stone and tools?

www.stonesculptorssupplies.com

these nice people are in No. Calif. and I use my HSS scrapers. sharpened a few times during the turning. I think alabaster and soapstone has a hardness of 2. so HSS works just fine.

thanks,

Laurie

Help you decide? Decide what? Whether to keep making beautiful things like this alabaster bowl? I'll vote yes. :D The turning and photography are both superb.

Decide on giving up wood so you can focus on turning stone? Only you can make that decision, but if this is an example, and the process is enjoyable - I don't see why not. It's beautiful.

I've heard stone dust is finer and that there is more of it than wooddust. Care to share what you've learned about that and anything else on how turning stone differs from turning wood?

Your beautiful piece is a path changer. I expect pathers will be trying stone soon after seeing your gorgeous work. Nice Job. :D:D

thanks everyone you helped me and I think what I need to do first is break down and buy a bigger lathe. I hope to get a jet 1642 by May. and I decide on it because of the money. can't afford a big green or yellow job.

for your comments, I thank you.

Laurie,

You know that I have loved every one your pieces that you have posted and this piece is no exception.

How thin are the walls? What is the lower limit on wall thicknes?

Does the stone fracture much? Have you had any blowouts?

It appears that the stone actually tends to disperse the light that is projected on it. Almost like it is glowing. Is that what you perceive or is it just me?

Love it. Please continue to post your work.
