Just so you don't think I've gone off the deep end, there is a reason why I turned this. There's a local art center that is having an upcoming show and the theme is "3 Legs or More", open to any medium. I've been on a good luck streak with local art shows because nobody ever enters any wood turnings. So, I usually get accepted just because it's a unique medium. Don't really know what made me think of a spider when I thought of "3 Legs or More", but this is what I came up with. It's mostly Osage Orange with some small pieces of redheart. It's all turned pieces (40 pieces) with a little bit of carving on the mouth and the front claws. It stands about a foot tall and is about 14" diameter. The body is just an egg, the head is a hollow form with the opening carved out and the inside painted with india ink, the rest is spindles joined by tenons. If you notice, She's even wearing a couple bracelets.

Curt,

I've spent the last ten minutes just staring in awe at your piece. It's wonderful and I wish I could pick it up in my hands. Very, very kewl. Staring at it, I find myself wishing I could pull the beast off her stand and stand her up on her spindly spider legs.

One suggestion, if you ever do another (a whole spider series!), consider having the "pin" the spider is impaled on run all the way through her body -- as if she were mounted in some scientist's bug collection. You'd have to attach a "flag" at the top of the pin listing the date and location where the spider was collected and giving her Latin and common name. Could be fun.

Awesome!! How creative! David is right, it begs to be picked up and turned around in the hands.

Well that is some spider! I have to agree about the pin through the body. That would really be different, not that it isn't already spectacularly different. Nice job!!

I've been looking at this and trying to figure out just what it looks like, I think an ANT. My son in law has an ant farm so I've been looking at them alot lately. But ants ususally have three body pcs. Great work!

That is reall good. I had been thinking of doing something like that with an ant, but the heads are more triangular, so I just left it in the back of my mind.

I am sure your execution is much better than mine would have been. The extra details at the joints really make it come together. Well done.

Ever play the game "Kooty" when little? That is what I thought of when I looked at the pictures. Great piece of work! You should win big time with that!

Just an afterthought (or two)

It does look just like the spiders in "Cooty"!

Looks like Mr. Becker had to add a bunch of exclamation points to satisfy the forum's 10 character minimum! :D
