Hi...just got a Rigid OSS (OS/BS?...whatever)...I am thinking that I need to get some 120 and 220 grit sleeves...but then I wondered whether the oscillating motion reduces the need for higher grits? Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

I have the same sander and use it a lot. For the spindles I use 100 and 180 grit the most.

Yeah, I use the lower (coarser) grits the most on my Jet OSS.

I use the lower (coarser) grits the most on my Jet OSS. The finer grits plug up easier.

I only use 100 grit on mine.

Medium grits are probably on my OSS the most but I've also got coarse and fine as well and depending on what I'm trying to do, they get used some too. The coarse work best if trying to thickness sand something between a single point fence and the spindle or rough shaping. The fine grits just generally are a way to avoid having to hand sand a final edge.

For spindle sanding I use mainly 120 and 220. The 220 just gets used in light passes to put the final finish on an edge as it will clog up easily....have the cleaning stick handy. Also use 80 some if I need to hog off a good bit.

I use some 80 for hogging when I'm feeling too lazy at my bandsaw to cut close to the line (it happens). Mostly use 100-120 and take it from there by hand.
