How do you do inlays?

I have seen this done on several projects here, but this one was undoubtedly my favorite, partly because of the inlay, and partly because of the wood. I just can't even picture how the inlay is done, though.

Thanks,

Amy :)

Amy, You use a router with an inlay setup like this. http://www.amazon.com/Woodstock-International-H3133-Inlay-Carbide/dp/B0000DD4MM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1203722257&sr=1-1
You make a pattern and use it to cut both the opening and the inlay.

Hey Amy, thanks for the compliment on my coffee table, it is almost done BTW, and I'll be posting pictures soon, anyway, how I did the inlay you are referencing was with a router, but I did NOT use a template. I found a picture I wanted, then recreated it on the wood (David Marks Technique) and then used my plunge router freehand to get most of the material out. Then it was a lot of painstaking work with a razor knife and chisel, took almost a day to do it  But the result I think will be fantastic, definately something you can't just go buy at pottery barn, lol...Oh, and you can see David Marks videos on diynetwork.com, the man is an inlay genius, that is how I am learning the techniques...

Hi Amy,

Check out this link (http://www.newwoodworker.com/rotrinlays.html) on using a router to make inlays.
