That's been my experience too. Reading their site makes it look like magic, but when you actually try it, it looks horrible.

I just received an email from Vector Magic that they are now charging for the use of the software. You can get a free bitmap but vectors are no longer free. They do have a sign up offer.

People are saying good things about trace in Corel X4. You can get a 15 day free trial.

i'm gonna miss pete bertrand. he did some truly amazing stuff. I don't think he'd have a problem with the one i'm looking to get done as he's done ones that were much worse. I've sent out several quotes today and everyone refuses to try.

Have you found anyone to do the conversion? If not, do you have a sample of the piece? I could see if I could convert it for you.

Arrrggggghhh,

I shouldn't be surprised that Stanford spun off VectorMagic. We had actually been having very good results with the sort of work that we were using it for. Word was just getting out amongst our student body and now it goes commercial....figures. :(

Well the price isn't outrageous anyway.

Craig,

We have used these guys with good results. However you must check thier work carefully as we have had text missing from a few items. Sent it back and they fixed it it no problem. Costs about the same as Pete did. We will miss him also as we had alot of crazy stuff done by him with awesome results.

Is there any sort of software out there that will convert to vector?

CorelDRAW has had various tools in it since V3....X4 is the latest version and there is a trial available from the corel website.
If you do a google search for "bitmap vector conversion software" it comes up with a few hits as well.

Corel does trace your raster files. So does Illustrator. I do not own Corel x3 or x4 so I can not speak of it. V12 did not do such a hot job of tracing. I have CS3 and it does a good job at tracing for quick traces. The best way is a good old hand trace thought. It is a good skill to have and will provide you with traces for many years to come :). Here's another one I just ran into. No idea of their quality, but looks like $18-$25 flat rate based on timing. If anyone has used them or does so, please share your experience for the benefit of others.

Since Will is not permitted to post his own link I will do it. He has a good reputation for quality work and a fair price.

I can tell you that William Desrochers does very nice work as Mike Null has said. William has done a couple tough ones for me and I was very satisfied with the results. His price is extremely resonable and he understands the different processes we use this art for - ie: laser, rotary engraver or vinyl cutter, etc. He understands what we do, that makes him worth a lot more to me. I would highly recommend him. Mike Null has posted his link.
