Here are a couple bowls I did this winter. The open form is turned from a piece of burch burl. I'm not crazy about the form on it, but the wood kind of told me what to do. I wanted to leave as much of the beautiful wood as I could. The hollow form is turned from spalted maple.

Very nice Jack, the wood is stunning. Your work with it shows it off well, as does your finish.

Beautiful wood in the first one. The HF is great, that spalting looks like a flower!

That is some killer wood. Stunning. I think you did the right thing and let the wood do the talking.

The hollow form is very nice also.

Nice work Jack. Perfect design to showcase the woods. I think you picked a perfect design for the Birch Burl. A+ my friend!!

Thanks for the compliments everyone. It makes things easier when you have nice wood to start with. The spalted maple is as sound as any I've ever turned. I start bowls all the time planning to turn it a certain way, when the wood tells me to do something else. The wood usually knows best.

Jeremy,

For finish I used satin deft spray. 6 or 7 coats steel wooled between. I then steel wooled and buffed using beal system.
