I'm looking to build a nice wine cabinet for my church & son's high school auction.

I looking for plans/ideas for a unique wine cabinet. I built one a couple years ago based on a pie safe (made with walnut & birds eye maple - it auctioned off at ~$2,700)

I found a picture that interested me, but no plans (see below--I'n sure the legs are longer than what is shown)
Have you seen any plans similar to this???

Any ideas?? Suggestions??? Links???

Thanks for your help!!!

Joseph, it shouldn't be too hard for you to sketch out something to build from for a relatively simple cabinet like that. Figure out what your major dimensions are, create some story sticks ("plan" dimension/component locations on a stick you can directly measure from instead of using a tape, etc.) and build the unit. You can measure off the actual carcass for fitting the doors, etc., as you build. Don't forget to figure in the extra lengths for jointery needs as you cut your components.

For most projects, I submit that you really don't need "formal" plans if you think about things. If you are unsure about how this might work for you, build a practice project that is similar...perhaps a cabinet for the shop or your home...before tackling the piece for your church. I think you'll be surprised...

Joseph,

I agree with Jim. Unless I am building a reproduction piece, I rarely follow a plan to the letter and design around the tools I have available, the type of wood I'm using, etc. A lot of the time I'll draw a basic sketch and then research it a bit to see how I want to build it. I would suggest looking at several different drawings or plans of similar cabinets, etc. so that you have in your mind places where you might have a problem. The cabinet you posted is in an Arts & Crafts sort of style so that would be one place I would look. It will at least give you an idea of how the joints, etc., are typically done in a cabinet of the design you posted. Use that information to design your cabinet.

I hear what you're saying, but I feel a little more confident customizing an existing plan. Specifically the joinery (I tend to over design, over engineer and over think stuff without a plan :o:o:o:o AND it really slows me down)

Do a search on Jason Tuinstra.

He built a beautiful one and posted it several years ago.

Here is the piece that Martin is probably referring to.

It is outstanding.

Jason's is an absolutely wonderful piece, but it's not a cabinet on stand design like the OP's picture shows.

Oops. I did miss that point. :o The inside layout might be useful for ideas though.

Here is a cabinet I built for my step-daughter. Different design.

That exact cabinet is built by Michel Roy in the Canadian Homeworkshop Magazine Winter 2008 issue. The mission the magazine sent him on was to build a great project for $25! (He used "vertical-grain Alaskan yellow cedar and western red cedar fence boards")

I built a couple of these modular units, each with a base unit for bottle storage and a top unit for glassware. The units I built used the short base for placing them on a counter top.

The plans include a floor standing base as well. You can make as many of the modular units as needed to form whatever size cabinet is appropriate.

The cabinet you are interested in building came from Canadian Home Workshop magazine Winter 2008 issue. Here is the link: http://articles.canadianhomeworkshop.com/Homepage/default/beauty-on-a-budget--$25-cabinet-n240892p1.html
