Ken,
Typical good job. I also want to thank you for still hosting the BP 2 x 4 contest entries. Someone was searching for info on a 2 x 4 contest at WC and I was able to direct them to your site.

No problem Eddie --- That is why it's out there for.

Hey Ken. Great work. Here's a click pen I made many years ago. It is very special. Special, because it blew up while I was turning it. Almost finished and, blam, about twenty pieces everywhere. It actually took longer to find the pieces than it did to put back together with CA glue. And, you'd never know it. It's a keepsake. Keep on turnin'.

That is a nice pen Phil but I think you have the wrong name. It looks like a Flat Top American double twist pen to me. Just like the ones in my post --- The other pens in the picture are click button pens.

But she does't twist. The upper body plunges down to release the tip. That's all I know.

Beautiful, Ken. I would like to learn to make pens one day, but I'm not sure I have the patience.

As Always.
I bought a Delta Midi Lathe in Nov '01, got several pen kits , mandrels, & stuff last Sept. The lathe is still in the box in the garage/shop. Some day (hopefully soon) I'll have time to unpack, set up and start turning. I did a lot of turning in my Dad's shop when he was alive, but we are talking 35+ years ago.
Good luck at the show, hope you return with no product & lots of cash!

Tony

I wish I could make built-ins that fast... I'd be a zillionaire.

First, I have to thank Ken Salisbury for inspiring me to try my hand at pen-turning! (He's the PEN MAN! :-)

While I'm thanking folks, Phil Phelps and Mike822 joined me for a lunch-time ad-hoc chat yesterday and both offered some useful tips and notes about pen-turning. Von filled out our chat group.

I've only been turning for about 2 months now and I'm not 100% happy with the turned barrels. So, I will probably re-mount them on the mandrel and take them down a little further. I had left the Padauk barrels about 1/32" - 1/16" proud of the bushings and then started sanding and finishing. I only had 150 and 220 grit sandpaper and I now realize that I need to dig out the 320 and 400 grits I think I saw in my Klingspor 20lb grab-box. For the finish, I used HUT's PPP (Perfect Pen Polish), but I don't think I got the base coat warm enough. Having gone through the entire process from prepping blanks to turning and finishing gives me the confidence to continue.

All in all, I learned a lot from this first attempt. Most importantly, I find that I enjoyed the entire process. Before, I would have thought that I would NOT enjoy production-type work. Now, I see that I have the patience to do so, the fore-sight to buy extra material, and the enjoyment from completing several items.

I just wish that the NCSU Craft Center would stay OPEN during Spring Break. I now have to wait 10 days before I can turn the other 4 blanks I had cut and drilled. :-(

Thanks again, Ken, Phil, and all the other turners who have shared their pen-turning experiences!!

Cheers,
Bob Janka, MBA
