I am going to be making a lumber rack and wanted recomendations on how far apart each support shold be under the wood. I was thinking every 2 feet. is that too much or would the wood start to bow.

thanks

Mike

My wood storage rack parts were bought from LV. Because of the weight that it carries I have the rails every 2 feet. The studs are on 2 foot centers, so every stud has a rail. They are lag bolted to the wall with I beleive 2 1/2" or 3" bolts. With the weight you are going to have to use the studs to make sure the thing does't come off the wall. Not sure what your centers are but if mine were 16" then thats how far mine would be apart.

Mike I spaced mine 32" oc and the rack is stacked from about 5' to 9'-6" off the floor with lumber. It cants approx 16" out from the wall. Each of the supports was anchored to a stud with 2-3/8"x6" lags centered in a stud and it has not budged.

I would recommend the John-Sterling shelving components you can find at Menards. I place my verticles 32" apart so they would line up with the wall studs. My brackets are similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/John-Sterling-300-Pound-Capacity-BK-0103-22/dp/B0009SUWEW

My main lumber rack currently has supports spaced at 24" which is quite workable. That said, when I move the storage upstairs sometime this year, I'll have some portion of the lumber storage with either closer distance or configured for vertical storage of "shorts". 24" spacing currently requires that I have longer stock under shorts in order to insure there is enough support under those shorts to make me comfortable.

24" on center is good.

Here is mine. The two outside parts are 16" on center with 32" between the middle supports. It is attached to the wall with 3/8 x 5" lag screws. It is very sturdy. \

Edit to add that this only cost me the price of the lag screws. It was built out of scrap 2x4s and scrap 1/2" plywood.
