In the current restoration/rennovation of our 1790 farm house, I need about 16' of chair rail that will match what is there currently.

So far, I've not found any stock countours that are the same, or even very close. I'm going to another place to day, but not holding my breath.

It is a pretty intricate contour. I reckon with enough passes through the router table with enough bits I should be able to get close, but this could be quite tricky and is likely to require bits that I don't have.

I know that if one has a molder, you can make a special cutter out of HSS and mill with that. Alas, I don't have a molder- just a Dewalt planer at this point and an 8" powermatic jointer (and a 6" rockwell for that matter). I guess a custom millwork place could do it, but for only 16', that's gotta cost a bunch.

Another possibility is that if I can find a pattern that is sorta close, I can just buy new standard chair rail for the 2 adjacent walls that need it, and hope that nobody notices that these 2 walls are different from the rest of the rooms. Since there are doorways seperating, they won't be side by side.

Suggestions?

In my neck of the woods (Northern California), all the lumber yards and big-boxes carry the same limited collection of moldings. However, there are a few specialists which have a much wider variety of molding for restoration work. (One of them even has a web site -- http://www.sfvictoriana.com/) I'm sure Virginia has the same need for outfits like this. Maybe hit your yellow pages or google with terms like "architectural molding" or "restoration"?
