Anybody have a tutorial to make those twist candlesticks?

I've been wanting to try some of those, and I know they were in fine woodworking magazine, but I'm not a subscriber?

Anybody willing to scan and email to a fellow woodturner?

Hey Ben, no tutorial but I saw a vid on you tube titled flame finial. I think this is the same twist you are after. Check it out. Looks like you just layout a grid amd draw then carve the twist. Hope this is what you were after...Bill..

I was going to note about the same thing.
If you are speaking about the one with double twisted flutes, the only thing the lathe is used for, is to hold the stock. The work is laid out in a grid as noted above, then drilled out and the rest is a lot of hand file, and sanding work. Takes a long time.
We had the plans in a book when I was in high school, but that was some 45 years ago. I'll look around.

Ben,

I'm almost certain I saw that article in Woodturning Design, back around the time I first started receiving it (ca. mid-to-late 2006 maybe)

I'd have to do some digging to find it, but I'll check and let you know. Maybe the one clue will help you out, though..

Yep. Kinda late, had to lay down so I wasn't pooped in school tomorrow.
Pete Jordan emailed me the stuff (and yes, Bill) those were what I was talking about. If that doesn't come throught, I'll let ya know. THanks for all your help!

When you lay a single twist off, the easiest way I've found is use painter's tape and spiral around the spindle the number of twists you want. Draw a pencil line along one side of the tape. Then carve (I use a foredom rotary tool) between the lines. Leave the line as a guide.

That's the way I do my spiral finials and it works well.

There is an article on twisted candlesticks in "Turning Projects and Techniques", a Winter 2008 Special Interest Publication of Woodworkers Journal. My wife found it in a local supermarket.

There is a guy in England that makes the most beautiful spiral tunings that anyone can imagine. I know he has a web page and also some books on the subject. Look for Mortimer Stewart. I think that his web page will open up new frontiers for you. If you are ever anywhere close to where he gives a demo do not miss it he is a great instructor.

Ron- I found his website. Wow! Those turnings are impressive, and I think I saw something about a record-breaking bowl!

Here (http://stuartmortimer.s411.sureserver.com/) is the link to his website. Check it out!

Also found this tutorial on hollow spiral candlesticks off www.woodturningonline.com . I think the marking for the spirals is nicely demonstrated.

Have not tried it yet, but on my list to get to one day.

I knew the way we did it was with a drill, but it was a brace and bit.

Your link above (http://home.att.net/~waterfront-woods/Articles/SpiralCandle.pdf (http://home.att.net/%7Ewaterfront-woods/Articles/SpiralCandle.pdf)) is the way I was taught do the layout for spirals, except using the lathe's indexing holes -- easier for most spirals than dividing up a circumferential strip of masking tape (I didn't respond earlier because I didn't have a good reference). The drilling approach shown will work for a hollow spiral, but not for a solid spiral twist. Once the layout is marked out, I was taught to use a triangular and/or round rasp to work the spiral lines to the depth and shape desired -- it's a lot easier and faster than it sounds.

Since the issue of the Legacy (and other) ornamental mills has come up here a number of times, such spirals (solid or hollow) are perfect projects for an ornamental mill.
