I have been asked to make a cedar cross for my church (start up church).

So its going to be portable and I have an idea how to make it.
But I have no idea where to find some cedar post or how to clean it up like the ones in the pictures. But I want to leave it a little rustic looking.(with the knots type of thing)
Also I have no idea on the finish it would need can anyone point me into the right direction? I have used the search button but have just found cedar wood furniture and not post.
Thanks in advance
jeff

By "post" do you mean round cedar stock? I ask because I've never seen a cross like this. (Historically, I'm pretty sure wooden execution crosses were not made with round stock.)

Also, the furniture in the picture you attached looks more like knotty pine logs and not cedar.

If cedar 4X4's will do, that's easy. You can buy cedar 4X4 fence posts at any lumber yard.

I'm sorry I new to this hobby, and maybe not describing what I'm talking about correctly.
This is what I'm trying to use

And yes I know its not historically correct, but our pastor really wanted that cedar post look.
I'm looking do make it the size of the center poles about 4" around and have the same type of finish.

How long does the longest post need to be? Perhaps I can help you get one. What part of the country are you in? We have an abundance of it here in Tennessee.

I know people who make porch posts, fireplace mantels, stair rails, etc out of cedar. Typically the debark it and work it with a drawing knife.

But the post on the bed in the picture, well that size anyways. But that is the look and finish I'm going for. I'm know thats not the normal cross look but our pastor is from Odessa (west Texas, that should explain it for people from Texas anyways :p)
Thanks for your input Pat

anymore or from you or anyone else is greatly appreciated
Jeff
