I'm making a few bottlestopers as gifts. I've chosen to start out with the Silicone one with the 9MM dowel as the mounting pin. ? is which is the best glue to use? Yellow woodglue, epoxy or CA.? I sure don't want them coming apart ...Bill...

Bill,
Dunno about the silicone type, but when finished with those, might want to have a look at Ruth Niles stoppers. Try www.torne-lignum.com (http://www.torne-lignum.com). Just a satisfied customer. We're not intimate or anything.

Richard:

Do the Ruth Niles stoppers really seal the bottle so you could lay it on it's side?

She guarantees that they do. Have not tried it myself. I make a few for sale, but cannot personally relate to leaving a bottle of wine unfinished. Folks in Europe and elswhere use them for olive oil, and some for Balsamic vinegar.

I can vouch for the Niles stoppers. I sell a ton of them at shows and that is the #1 question I receive. I now lay an open bottle (full of water) on its side near the display. The questions suddenly stopped
As for the glue question - Titebond works just fine.

I used silicone glue or "Goop" on the theory that it was flexible and would be compatable with the stopper. Has worked well in our house for at least six months of regular use.

I have been using the "nice" chrome ones from Woodcraft. One of the things that I like about them is that the piece that attaches the wood to the metal is a threaded rod. This comes in handy when your refrigerator does not have a location that is tall enough to accept the bottle and the stopper. You can unscrew the turned piece and still store the bottle with the stopper then. They look like this:

As for the wooden one dowel... I would think titebond as well. I would think CA could be too brittle and have a tendency to break in the long run with the type of stress that will be applied to the stopper.
