I bought mine from Forestry Suppliers in a 5 gallon pail which they shipped. Pretty painless and good stuff.

I get it by the gallon at Woodcraft. I know there are cheaper spots out ther but that is just me. Get a good chainsaw when you go to buy. Steahl and Husky have great reviews. After owning several cheapies they are not worth the hassel..Bill..

Forestry pail top says water based paint-clear. Latex paint should be available much cheaper than $45 for five gallons, but will just plain waterbased paint work?

I bought mine direct from UC Coatings years ago...5 gallons lasts a long time!! You may want to check with your local AAW chapter. Many clubs buy in bulk and sell to members at a very attractive price in gallon quantities.

AnchorSeal is a wax emulsion and designed for the job. Paint will work...I used that a number of years back for "sealing" the ends of a bunch of logs I was going to get milled...but I've found that AnchorSeal does a better job at controlling moisture loss through the end-grain than the paint. The only thing comparable would be to use VERY HOT paraffin wax...hot enough that it actually soaks into the end-grain.

But if need be, you can certainly use paint.

It was $16.84 UPS second day.... I can't remember if they had a cheaper option.

Chris, it says water based paint, but under it it says Waxlor.... it is a wax emulsion just like Anchorseal. Goes on milky white and dries clear.

I buy mine from Baileys, which is a chainsaw/logging supply store, with great prices. You'll never buy chain locally again (even though I try to buy everything locally--just can't do it at the stihl dealer; too much markup). I have a breaker/spinner & buy chain on the spool.

It is an off-brand, by valspar, packaged for baileys, but it works great in my experience, and is MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper than anchor seal at the local hardware store. It cannot be frozen, or it will be ruined, just like anchor seal. They do make products for use in freezing weather, but this isn't one; When it arrived at my house last winter, it wasn't packaged with any insulation, and was pretty cold when I got it. I'd just make sure someone is at home to bring it inside if you live in an area that is below freezing.

Paint is a crapshoot, as high-shrinkage stock can check badly beneath it. It's not thick enough, and multiple coats doesn't seem to help. Anchorseal is great stuff buy paying shipping makes it expensive for many.

Locally we use Henry #107 tar emulsion in commercial sawing applications with great success. 6 bucks a gallon in the roofing section of your local Home Depot.

Around here Pacific Madrone is the most unstable wood to be found, yet it behaves beautifully in seasoning using Henry water-soluble tar on the ends. This madrone flooring stock has been in the stacks over 4 years:
