On the web I have seen lots of turnings that are dyed, with an array of bright multiple colors fading into one another.

I'm interested in trying to achive that type of finish, I have bought myself 5 - 2 fl. oz. bottles of Trans Tint Dyes in

Blue
Green
Lemon Yellow
Orange
Purple

The store was out of Red

On finewoodworking.coms website they have a few vids of how to create a sunburst finish, he uses the powerd water dyes. can be found here.
How to Create a Sunburst Finish (http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/SkillsAndTechniques/SkillsAndTechniquesPDF.aspx?id=30182)

A finish like you would see a a fine Electric Guitar, or Mandolin.

A finish something like these by Chris Pytlik (pic found on the AAw website members gallery)

And of course , I LOVE THIS ONE!!! http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowyes.gif

I have GOT to make myself something with a Patriotic finish like that!

Heres one called Purple Sunset that I like too.

Take a look at Michael Allison's web site here.

He does some Vibrantly colored works also.

So i'm looking for tips, tricks, and anything else to help achive finishes like this.

I'd really like to SEE some of yours too if anyone here is using the Trans Tint dyes.

Thanks.

Some of this work is dyes (both washed and sprayed with an airbrush) and some of it is transparent acrylics (Golden has a bunch of colors) sprayed with an air-brush. My memory tells me that Chris talked a little about his techniques on WoW, but I couldn't tell you when...but it was awhile ago.

That's exactly what I thought too Rob, there is alot of fast growing sugar maples? around here.
As the corn fields went by the wayside to make room for the Suburbs in the 50's 60's and on they were planted like crazy as they were cheap, and fast growing.
Pretty plain looking, but plentiful.

French polish type cotton pads, Air Brushing, brush, or sponges can be used to apply. Layering colors and blending effects. Walnut oil and shallac padded/wiped on, then A super blonde shellac in multiple coats. Give it a dancing effect in the colors. I just started learning about them and need to buy a few more colors they have about 20 but at $16.99 a 2oz bottle I will start playing with the 5 colors I have bought so far, although I really do need to get the Black and the Red too.

And I need to get a new airbrush too.

This finish technique looks awsome to me, I do like plain finishes on wood, but this type can add some ZING to a plain piece.

There is some info on their website at homesteadfinishing.com
Can be mixed with water or alcohol, and several other mixes.

Alot for me to learn yet about it and do some testing pieces of flat stock before turning something then ruin it experimenting. lol:eek:
