My wife bought a set of hickory drumsticks. I got to thinking I could make these if I had a lathe. What did you use to make the tips?

I've made several sets for my son. I've used hard maple and purpleheart. The tips are just the same wood as the rest of the stick. They're pretty simple basic spindle work, 17" long x 1/2" diameter is what he likes. Purpleheart is almost indestructible.

I've made a couple out of oak. I don't use anything special for the tips, just the same wood.

Thanks for posting this. It reminded me that I need to make some drumsticks for a co-worker's son. My co-worker gave me a few various crotch pieces from trees that he cut down on his property.

I have a scrap of purpleheart laying around that I may use - never thought about using that for drumsticks. I'm sure his son will think they are very cool.

Joe, made a few pair out of oak for my stepsons - both are very accomplished drummers. Simple to make - just used one piece of wood for everything - no special head.

Hope that helps.
