View Full Version : Electrical box for large paddle switch?

I bought one of these paddle switches from Grizzly to use on my table saw (hopefully?)

This thing just barely squeezes into the typical metal in-wall electrical boxes, even the deep ones don't have enough room for the wiring and grommet/clamps that will be needed.

Ideally I'd like to find something like the box pictured on the back of this switch:

The end result I want to achieve is similar to this:

Anybody know what type of box I should be looking for? What it's called and where to find it?

Thanks a bunch.

Lowes sells some plastic junction boxes with flat, screw-on covers. Perhaps one of them would work for you? holes can easily be added to a side for cord grips and to the face for the switch using normal woodworking tools. Spade bits work great in the plastic.

I just used one of those switches last week. Went into a standard plastic box just fine. I haven't used a steel box in many years; are they smaller?

I don't know if they're smaller or not, but the one I had at home, which was 2.5" deep, barely accepted the length of the switch, and sure wouldn't fit anything else in there, such as wire nuts and grommets. I will need to be able to fasten it to either my saws rails, or the saws cabinet. It has to be sturdy enough that I can bump it off with my knee, or hip.

Gonna stop by Home Depot after work to look at the gray Carlon non-metallic switch boxes...if they carry them.

I had hoped to find something like Steel City uses, which looks like it was made just for this switch.

They sell extensions for both the steel boxes and the blue plastic ones in both HD and Lowes.

What you want to look for is a deep (2 1/8") metal handy box. Or if you want to get really fancy you can look for 1 gang water proof 2 inch deep metal with three screw knockouts. Get a couple of grommets also.

If you really want plastic, take a look at enclosures on www.automationdirect.com.
