I had the chance to harvest a nice size cherry tree at my dad's farm last weekend. We hauled the whole tree back to his house in four foot lengths and I hauled three pieces of it all the way back to Fort Mill, SC. I got the butt end of the tree, the third length up, and then a piece about 8 inches in diameter that was well on up the trunk.

The tree was about 14" or 15" in diameter at the ground and this bowl came out of the first section. Sorry about the picture. I haven't taken time to clean out my lightbox since I've been so busy lately. An old wrinkled t-shirt will have to do.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

Wow Raymond!! You always post the most impressive work and this is no exception! Love the size, color and the consistent thickness! Amazed at the amount of sapwood! Seriously - very nice work!

Very nice regardless of the background. As a matter of fact I did not even notice the background until I read your post. The bowl steals the show.

I love the contrasting color, topped off by the small bark edge. Beautiful turning!

Ray, you are spot on with this one. The contrast with the sap and heart in cherry makes it one of the best types to make a natural edge. The design curve you chose is excellent.

Sorry for the stupid question. But how do U get the bowl shaped that way ? Does it warp that way or how is that done. You can tell I am a new turner.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I appreciate the feedback.

Dan,

The oblong shape is actually an optical illusion. If the sides of the bowl came up to the same height it would be somewhat round. I turned this green so the drying wood actually increases the effect as well.

Super bowl Raymond,

And to think that you are a South Carolinian as well.
