O.K. Since we recently had a few heated discussions on planes, what companies planes make up the Majority of your collections?

Since I started this thread,I'll go first.

Mostly Clico bench, LN block, Record plough with sundry other makers for misc stuff (Stanley, St James Bay, Knight, Herdim, Veritas)
Slightly skewed towards British manufacturers of course because of location.

I am just starting, so I have the "cheap" one ... but I assure you as soon as I can learn a few basics, and bring some more bag lunches, I am on track for a Veritas / LN. I have seen what they do, and I will be happy with the upgrade.

3 of my bench planes are Stanley made, though only 2 have the Stanley name on them. I've got a Norvell Shapleigh block plane, a DE7 (Which is also Shapleigh's Hardware) and have a Norvell Shapleigh smoothing plane en route, though I'm unsure of who made that one just yet.

However, I have a #51 spokeshave and a #80 cabinet scraper, both made by Stanley as well. I'm honestly not sure if they count or not ;)

No brand actually has a majority of my planes--they are split too many ways. I've got about a dozen (give or take) Stanley's, 2 Lee Valley, 1 Clark and Williams Smoother, 6 C&W hollows and rounds, a matched pair of drop leaf table planes--Robbins, and a half dozen or so of older molding planes.

23 Stanleys, 17 Woodies.

But many of the Stanleys and most of the woodies are set up for one specific task.

I also have around 30 pre-1928 Disston and Atkins saws and at least that many pre-war chisels and gouges. While I spent my first 30 years woodworking with a small fraction of those tools, these days old tools can be had so cheap there's no reason someone of my age and experience has to compromise when he reaches for a tool.

L/N, L/V and others don't make anything I need.

Mostly Old Stanleys, and almost complete Type 5 Bedrocks with
a few Lie Nielsens. Love the LN 102!

Funny I did not know what I had for sure till I started checking.

Stanley- 2 #4's one type 17 Baily, 1 handyman my wife bought for me, one type 13 no 5 real nice, no 80 scraper, 78 without a fence, 278 likewise, no 71 made in England purchased new, 75 again purchased new.

LV- low angle block, 4 1/2 smoother, small plough plane, router plane, scrub plane.

Ohio Tool- 04 1/4, 05, 06c, 07c.

11 misc. wooden molding planes.

2 wooden jointers,(makes a better scrub than the scrub does.)

Este- made in Germany no 4 have not used it much again my wife bought it for me, but has a fairly thick iron.

It's interesting the Stanleys are on the top of the poll, but not as much in the replys.

I had a problem at one time:
~30 Stanleys
(too cheap to buy Bedrocks)
4 Millers Falls
5 Sargeants
6 Keen Cutters
4 Veritas
1 Lie Nielson
and at least one of each:
Winchester
Craftsman
Dunlop
Ulmia
ECE
and some junk I've been given or bough before I knew what I was buying.

I've found that with so many to choose from I tend to just grab a new one when I find one dull. As a result sharpening is a REAL drag.

I really only need a few:
Type 9) #3,#4-1/2, 5 & 7
#65
LV LA block
#71
#12
#80
#93
#190

Oh man, I guess I need more than I thought.

I've got a minty 2nd edition Walter's guide that's probably worth more than any of the iron, that cracks me up.

The mathematician in me insists that I answer "none". While Stanley makes up a plurality, they are well short of a majority. In rough order of prevalence:
Stanley
Record
Old woodies
Shop-made woodies
Shepherd
Lee Valley/Veritas
and in no particular order, one each of
ECE
KeenKutter
Craftsman
Sargent

^ Don't worry Don, a few yard sales and you'll be up with everyone else..

I've 20+ old Stanleys, 3,4,5,6,7,8,10,45,79,110 a few others and dublicates of most.

My planes were a gift from a rather nice guy who had pretty much become dis-enamoured with the hobby. He had some serious money so he had nice stuff.

It was about 36 yerars ago. I haven't felt the need to pony up more for any others.

I got hooked on planes at a Woodworking show a few years back. I currently have the following in my arsenal -- it is a slippery slope for sure:

LN 102 Block Plane
LN 60 1/2 Block Plane
LN 62 Low Angle Jack
LN 4 1/2 Bench with standard and High Angle Frogs
LN Scrub
LN #8 Jointer Plane

LV Concave and flat spokeshaves
LV Cabinet Scraper
LV Large Shoulder Plane

Thanks!

Michael Lutz

7 stanleys
1 LV block plane
1 Great Neck block plane

Now I just have to figure out how to use them all.

LN: 13
Stanley US: 11
St James Bay Tool Co.: 7 (but they're miniatures and probably shouldn't count)
ECE/Ulmia: 4
Record: 3
LV: 2
Steve Knight: 2 (both great--I wish more people knew about Steve's work)
Stanley England: 1
Union: 1
Dunlap: 1
Rapier: 1
Ray Iles: 1
Clifton: 1
Radi Plane: 1
Kunz: 1 (hidden somewhere so no one will ever see it and make fun of me)
Hamler: 1 (beautiful "kit" I have not yet commissioned)
Japanese smoother from Harrelson, can't remember the name (not yet commiissioned)
old specialized wooden from various makers: about 150

Of these my favorites are the old wooden planes, because I like the feel of wood sole against wood piece. In metal, the LV medium shoulder plane feels perfect in the hand.

What I don't have and wish I did was something from Clark & Williams, just to have something made by Larry. Will see him later this summer at Marc Adams and may pick up something then.

And if I ever had a gazillion dollars to splurge on something I don't need, I'd try to get a Holtey 28" or even longer jointer, though my LN 8 is wonderful and one of my most used planes. (I wonder how may people edge glue up stock directly from the power jointer.)

Best, Ted.
