I am SO tired of this snow and cold. Seems like we get out of the low teens just long enough for a storm to come in and dump more of this white stuff on our heads.

Not Much snow here in Detroit. We have had a few storms lately but for the season we have to be low. Its been to cold but not enough snow. To me if you are not measuring it in feet it does not even count.

I don't ever complain about cold and snow because I know that fairly soon it will be July here in central MD and the temp will be 95 with 95% humidity. Now that's when I really start to complain.

I'll take double of all the snow you've had in the past five years if you'll take the snow we received just this season.

We are currently at 140+ inches for the season......want to trade??

Don't know. We've had WAY less snow than usual, but the cold has been hanging on for a long time. I think I'm sick of the high heating bills more than anything. Sure takes a bite outta' the old tool budget!

Well I guess we count - had 2 ft in 1 day!
We have a poll at work for when the 6' tall mountain of plowed snow, right outside our back door, will melt. We're figuring mid April.

I hate winter - always have - my rule is I am not allowed to complain in the summer because I do it enough in the winter

15 more days to the spring equinox - I think.

About 2" overall fell night before last...supposed to get 6". Guess we were lucky. Should hit 50 tomarrow they say, then chance of more snow late Saturday to early Sunday. I for one am ready for spring.

What the heck, its March, only three months til spring, not to worry. Temps going to the high twentys today, shirt sleeve weather. Only six inches of new snow night before last, hardly enough to bother with. Kinda of a nice winter. Couple years back had 74" on the ground at New Years, then it started snowing hard for 90 days, now that was a pain it the ****. Ya can't actually appreciate spring and early summer if there's nothing to compare it to, I'd hate the bland four seasons the same yall get down country. And i know darn well people shoulldn't live anywhere that it get above 75* for more than an hour a day. To dang hot to move.

It's wintertime folks. In New England (OK - anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line) , that means snow. Lee Scheirer - I'll trade you last year's PA snow for double what we've gotten over the past 5 years - you'll lose bigtime on that one.

Seems to me, and others areound here concur, that as a kid in the 60's, we had as much snow every yar as we're getting this year. We used to have huge piles of snow on the tree belt and dug out snow forts. It's been a rare winter recently tht the kids could do that.

Let's look at the good side of this. The cold and snow kills the mosquitos and ticks. Last year, we had towns spraying for mosquitos and the deer ticks were going nuts spreading Lyme disease. We had drought warnings and wter restrictions because the resevoirs were so low.

Is the snow holding me up on some stuff (getting toys out of my garage and in to the basement)? Yep. Does winter make me appreciate the other seasons? Yep. Gonna complain about the snow, even though it's been a "good" winter for a change? Nope.

I'm in Connecticut. the only thing i dread more than another snowfall is the spring thaw..I've already had a small taste of flooding (basement & shop) I'm not looking forward to that.

Rob Russell

Walt,

You might want to take some steps to divert water away from your shop/foundation. Given the accumulation we have on the ground, there is a strong potential for flooding this spring.

Good luck.

First post here, been lurking since the Pond drained. (though I didn't post much there either.)

I miss the good old winters. I remember standing in the front room of our house and looking out at the snow drifts, I had been there watching for at least 10 mins when a knock at the door surprised the whole family. A friend had driven his full size van (cause minivans didn't exist) in the 150 ft driveway that I had been staring at - but I didn't see him cause the drifts were too high.

Just about the time I gort old enough to really make some good snow forts, the winters quit co-operating.

I live in RTP NC now for economic reasons, but Mom and Dad still live in that house. They tell me that this is the first year they have had a good old fashioned winter since then.

If it's gonna be cold we might as well have some snow to play in!

Subject: Diary of a Snow Shoveler

December 8: 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season
and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window
watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a
Grandma Moses Print. So romantic- we felt like newlyweds again. I love
snow!

December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow
covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there
be
a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea
I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years, felt like a boy
again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the
snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the
driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.

December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a
disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have
a white
Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so
much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow
again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad
he's our neighbor.

December 14: Snow, lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped
to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my

breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.
This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried
everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much
shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I
wouldn't
huff and puff so.

December 15: 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and two extra shovels. Stocked
the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes
out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the
driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an
hour,
which I think was very cruel.

December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for five hours. I had to pile the blankets on To
stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate
her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her.
God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in
my own living room.

December 20: Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn
stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Goddamn snowplow came
by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're
too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only Hardware

store around to see about buying a snow blower, and they're out. Might
have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I
have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's
lying.

December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas, because 13 more
inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't
melt 'til August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to
shovel, and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and
dressed again, I was too tired to shovel! Tried to hire Bob, who has a
plow on his truck, for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too
busy. I
think the a**hole is lying.

December 23: Only 2" of snow today, and it warmed up to "0". The wife
wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What, is
she nuts?!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she
did, but I think she's lying.

December 24: 6" more snow. Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the
shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the
son-of-a-bitch who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the snow
by his privates and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I just
know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and
then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws
snow all over everywhere I've just been! Sadistic bastard. Tonight the
wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our
presents, but I was too busy watching for the Goddamn snowplow.

December 25: Merry &%!%# Christmas. 20 more inches of the &!#%$@! slop
tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my

blood boil. God, I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by
asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The

wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I
have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff
her
into

the microwave.

December 26: Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was
all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27: Temperature dropped to -30, and the pipes froze. Plumber
came after 14 hours of waiting for him; he only charged me $1,400 to
replace all my pipes.

December 28: Warmed up to above -50. Still snowed in. The WITCH is
driving me crazy!!!!!

December 29: 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it
could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he
think I am?

December 30: Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver. He is now
suing me for a million dollars; not for only the beating I gave him, but

also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his butt. The wife
went home to her mother. 9 more inches of snow predicted.

December 31: I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8: Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep
giving me. ...

Rob, boy have I been trying...ground is still hard as a rock. did manage a small ditch around the basement windows. the shop is another matter; may have to grin and bear it until the grounds soft enough to lay in a decent drainage ditch. it amazes me that with the amount of water I've not had any problems with rust. this is the first year (out of 17 years in the house) that we've gotten flooding this early. this winter reminded me of winters I remember from the 50's..snow before halloween, and it just keeps coming!

I won't complain at all and gee Richard...we're thinking of moving your way or Nova Scotia in a few years. I flat out love snow....deeper the better! Lived in a spot that got 14 Meters per year in the Alps for three years. Snow blowers are wonderful, so are steep metal roofs....no shoveling and a big attic!
We've had ice and snow(47"s) this year and winter isn't over....oh, we live in the northwestern NC mountains. I just fired up the tractor and plowed the driveway....no salt as it's gravel...actually I never plowed our driveway this year. If it was that deep I just stayed home and piddled around in my shop. I got our kitchen finished!!!
Anyway, I wish you the best in AK, I loved it up there winter before last, skied Aleyeska and flew resupply missions to the DEW Line sites, plus some jumpers that had to be dropped at Fort Wainwright...in January! With all the gear they had on the Eng. had to turn on the a/c in the C-130 to keep them from puking in our plane!! At least we only froze the Loadmasters and had to thaw them out when we got home.
Anyway, snow some more!!! :)

We had a beautiful day today, it was warm and I got to work outside in the yard a bit. Started to do the Spring lawn cleanup picking up sticks and whatever else found its way into the yard through the winter months.

Birds are singing!

I'm ready for this weather, prpbably two more weeks before I can open all the shop doors and really enjoy woodworking to the max!

Nature played a cruel joke here. 69 degrees yesterday, twenties and thirties today! Maybe some snow again next week. Did take advantage of the weather though. Cleaned the shop (with the door OPEN!) and washed the car (it needed it BAD).

for snow if I could. We've had three overnites around 40 below. And whether you measure Celsius or Fahrenheit at those speeds it doesn't matter..

At least the roving rabbits in the neighbourhood still show up, so they're coping..somehow..
