filler for exhaust

Hi everybody. have a question. making a muffler for my Gast vacuum pump. After plugging one end and drilling several half-in. holes and providing for an inlet at one end of a 2 in. pvc pipe to put a clear plastic tubing to the motor, what would be a good 'filler material' for the inside of the pipe? Go to the local building supply and pick up a cheap inline filter for an air compressor. :)
