So a friend walks into my shop and says if I have any scrap wood and extra time, he would like a box so big by so big to put by his fireplace to put kindling in. Thinking that I just can't make a nailed up creation for him this is what I came up with. His house has a rustic atmosphere so I put rope handles on it. It's ash no stain and clear oil finish. 26 X 16 X 16. Hope he likes it, he's coming to pick it up this afternoon. :)

Hey Greg,
I'd say that's nicer than anything we ever had when we had wood stoves!
Definately something way ahead of nailed together scrap. With the aged patina it'll exude after a few uses, it'll look great IMO.

Cheers.

Greg

I think you did just perfect. The dovetails show off your craftsmanship and the rope handles and lid stop add a rustic element. Very nice job.

Ok Greg. I'll make you a deal.

You send that box to me, and I'll send an old plywood shipping crate to your friend. Tell ya' what , I'll send him two shipping crates:D,;)

Nice work. Very well done.

Is he really going to put firewood in it? I wouldn't.

Greg,
His wife (or possibly daughter) is going to snag that before kindling gets put into it, so you'd better start nailing together a replacement. :D

They just picked it up a little while ago and they were both talking that way.

To be a really nice guy, did you fill it with kindling for them? :) Nice box!

I bet it becomes a blanket chest, and a darn fine one at that.

Nice work on the box!

I'm with some of the others and believe not alot of scrap wood will get into it.

Greg, Wow, what a nice job you did on that. Ironically, I just built a smaller one for my cousin who has a small hearth so the one that I built is smaller. I used cherry and redwood. The dimensions on the one I built are 10x10x14.

Again, what a great job you did on the one that you built. I'm sure your friend is thrilled to have it!

Kindly,

Yours is very nice too. I love the base you put around it. Are those dowels or Miller Dowels?

Hi Greg,

The dowels are actually plugs to cover counter sunk screws.
