Well, I modded the old rockwell 46-111 so I can turn more than an 11" diameter bowl, and just wanted to show off my first plus-11" bowl. This is a 13x4.5" dia. "hollow" bowl, which was also my first with concave internal walls--that was a challenge. I ground down an old tool that I got with the lathe & made a very narrow scraper & used a small tool rest inside, with light cuts. A hollowing system is in the near future for me for sure. I have almost all the pieces I need for an articulated system.

This is cherry, from a neighbor's takedown. This is the stump piece, and has a little crack in it that was strengthened with liquid CA glue. Hopefully it won't open up too much as the whole thing dries. This was sanded to 320 in the lathe, then 400x by hand, then a bit of BLO to make the grain stand out, then wet-sanded with blo to 600 grit. It shines even after the BLO is dry, but I'm going to put some dewaxed shellac then lacquer on it afterwards to make it shine even more.

I like that...a lot. I happen to really enjoy forms like this that have the slightly in-turned rims. Bravo on leaving the sap, too.

Looks great Nathan!

You seem to be a very handy guy. You don't have time to change a water heater do you?

Nice work. I agree with Jim, those double-curved bowl sides are really pleasing.

That's a really nice bowl there Nathan. I'll wish real hard that the crack doesn't open up any...

Can ya show us the lathe mods? I'm very curious to see what you've done to the old Rockwell.

Do you have any pics of the mod's you did to your lathe? Great job on the bowl!

Sorry, just saw the added swing in the other thread. Hope it works well for you.

Nathan that is beautiful. I to like the inward slant of the rim. Well done. It looks like your mod has worked well.

Very nice Nathan. Especially pleasing to me, cherry being one of my favorite woods.

Looks good Nathan. Cherry and cracks go together. I think if you just saw the blank in half and then glue it back up you'd be ahead of the game some of the time.

Thanks for all the praise, guys. I've been having a lot of fun lately! I forgot to mention, I have another thread about the headstock riser I made out of black locust. I also changed out the motor from 1/2hp to 1.5HP 220v leeson, and added a "jackshaft" reducer setup that gives me a 3:1 reduction. Since it doesn't have the factory step pulley, its not exactly the same as before, but I guess is roughly between 240-300 rpm for the low speed setting. I should figure it out on paper to be sure. I count anywhere between 4-5 clicks when I'm turning a slightly out of round blank.

More to come as free time allows. I'm turning 1-2 pieces per week or whatever I have time for. Thanks people!

Nathan,
That is a great looking bowl, nice job on the sweeping curves, inside and out. Don't you just love the look of cherry, I also like the thickness of the sidewalls. Very nice overall.
