Here's a piece of Spalted Oak that I thought wouldn't amount to much. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. 5x5.5 with a lacquer/buff finish.

That must have been tough to turn with such a giant hole in it .
I really like the form.
I have yet to try a HF with a hole sounds like it would be kind of hard.
Great job!!

I have to agree that had to be difficult to hollow out with the big hole in the side. Beautiful end result. What hollowing tools did you use?

Thanks Guys!! On this one I used the John Jordans in a Don Pencil Arm Brace. One day when I get the larger blanks going again I'm going to setup my Keith Clark system. But anything less tha about 8" I'll do free hand. I enjoy the feel, so figure me as crazy!!

Brain, that one really has some wonderful color. Great job!

Oh, Christopher...the big hole can sometimes be an advantage! You can actually "see" what your wall thickness is before you break through the side. LOL :D

That's very true Jim. And no one should be afraid of the voids. They aren't that hard to turn. Use a steady hand, sharp tools and make sure you have the lathe at the right speed. Take it easy and you won't get any catches or big chip outs. For me I think they are easier because you don't have to constantly stop and vacuum it out. :D
