Well, I went ahead and bought the lathe that nobody had ever heard of. I got it and 14 turning tools with it for $50. It also came with the stand. The stand is pretty heavy, it has about 200 lbs. of sand in the legs.
I am going to learn how to sharpen and hopefully learn some things in St. Louis next weekend and maybe get sucked into this vortex I keep hearing of.

I know that lathe, good enough to start you on a very perilous cycle into turning . . . you will find that it does have limits, but you can spindle turn up to a meter, bowl turn 200mm bowls with the faceplate and a cheap chuck.

Is the spindle size 3/4 x 8? About 1/3 Hp? You can turn up a little handle for the tailstock.

Watch sharpening the tools. They appear to be Carbon steel. High speed steel has HSS stamped or printed on it. If carbon steel, keep water close to keep the tool cool. Do not let it turn color. If HSS do NOT quench with water. It will ruin the tool.

It will give you a place to get started from, and certainly a place to go. My first late,(Sears two tuber) cost less than that one and was about the same quality. HF sells what looks to be that same lathe under thier brand name. pay close attention to what Bruce had to say about the tools, and happy turning! :):)

Don't worry, the minute you put tool to wood you'll be hooked.
