What router do you use for routing dovetails on your dovetail jig? I'm just beginning my quest for another router!

I generally use my DW618 with a fixed base for routing dovetails. I prefer a fixed based router for this work as the center of gravity is lower, making it easier to handle on the jig. Just about any of the 12-13 amp routers that have a fixed base available are a good match for this job. But consider a kid that includes multiple bases for best value long term.

Porter Cable Model 100. 7/8 hp It's been around for decades and just recently has been discontinued. Same base as the 690, very squat and low (great balance) and it's round top let's me use it one handed if need be. There's still some NOS around and can be had used pretty reasonable. One caveat- 1/4" shank only.

I really like the Triton 2 1/4 HP Plunge router, model M0F001KC. Around $200 retail. Works great in a table as well.

I'd probably be checking with Pat Warner, here on the board. He's pretty much "the source". He has an excellent website also.

pc 690 - you do not need a major workhorse to cut dovetails.

I have always used my Milwaukee 5615 with the body grip. I picked up a DW618 the other day and will task it for this purpose now. The Mil just got an offset base adapted to it today as it's new role will be bearing guided profiling.

I was recently thinking about getting a dedicated router to cut dovetails in a Leigh jig. I have scrapped the idea since set up for half blinds is very fast and through requires two set ups.

That said I use either the PC690 or Bosch 1617 magnesium. I like the Bosch for the lighter weight and the wood handles but the PC seems to run better on the jig, maybe it is just me though. Waxing all surfaces helps too.

I have a Porter Cable dovetail jig and use my Bosch 1617 with the fixed base on it.

Like Jim, it just feels better with the fixed base.

Milwaukee BodyGrip 5615.

Comfortable, easy to control. It was built for this kind of work.
