As I was dusting the curio cabinet a few hours ago, I dusted this carving made by my brother 18 years ago and thought that I would post it for giggles. It's a copy of an original work called "Splash" by Don Mahieu that was published in Fine Woodworking Design Book Five (Tauton Press, 1990). If you see any of these books in a used bookshop, I highly recommend buying them...they show some very inspiring work.

I like it a lot.

Last night DIY showed an episode of Woodworks which focused on two famous woodworkers. One was James Krenov. I don't remember the other guy's name, but he made pieces with a whimsy similar to the "Splash" piece.

That was a good episode... the other woodworker is Art Espenet Carpenter who passed away in 2006. Here is an interesting link on Art.

Both he and Krenov inspired a lot of woodworkers, myself included. Although my tastes run more toward American Period furniture, these are two talented craftsmen.
