View Full Version : 3/4" Rail & Stile Bits on 1" Stock

Hi,

I have a set of Freud Rail and Stile bits that are made for use on 3/4" stock. They're great, but I need to build some bi-fold doors, and would like to construct them using 1" stock. Bad idea? It seems like it would work, I'd just have a thicker rabbit on the backside of the bit, and might need to finish the cleanout if the backside cutter isn't thick enough to remove the full thickness of the stock. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,
Paul

I can't see why it won't work If you set the height correctly so the cope and stick match. I would think you would be left with the same kind of joint.

Price cutter has bits for thicker material used in interior doors but I think (I said think) the main difference is a thicker slot and tenon.

Do a test cut first.

Paul,

As you noted, the problem is the material that will remain on the back side of the cope cut. Find a convenient (and safe, of course) way to remove that and the joints should work fine.

Paul,
I used a freud raised panel bit set and had great success doing a column wrap. The extra material in back will allow you to have a very sturdy door. Good for shutting and reduced wobble. I used 1" x 1" x 1-1/4" on stiles and 3/4" for the rails and panels.

Here is a pic, ( http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=777704 (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=16170))
Take a look at the end of this. It was installed in a basement that i did for a customer of mine.:D

I also just measured my freud 99-260 cope cut bit and it looks like its a 15/16" total depth of cut bit. ( outside of carbide to outside of carbide). So maybe you could set the fronts 1/16 inch deeper and get more relief on the front edge of the panels?

At any rate, I think you can make it work!:)

Sorry all,
I may need help with cut and paste.
I copied a link and tried to edit the last numbers and it did not work.

The thread was posted a few days ago and was called" some one post some pics please!" by Barry Brunner.

I had a freud cope/stick in my posession for about 2 hours, returned when I realized it ONLY did 3/4" material. Bought an Amana set, it does 3/4"-1 1/4" with the same set, different configurations. Also allows me to tune the panel slot for plywood flat panels! Costs a little more up front, saves me a fortune in PIA setups down the road. Have Had the same experience with sash bits, my solution was to stop buying jointery bits from Freud until they start engineering cutter stacks like Amana!

You can get this job done with the 3/4" set, after its over you may be asking yourself do I want to go through that again?
