Are these screw chucks? I think they are.

Is this how they are supposed to by used? I looked online but could not find any pictures or diagrams of how to use them. In the Clewes DVD that I have he used one but did not show how to set them up.

And finally, Here is the faceplate that the guy had that I bought the lathe off of. It is not the right size threads. It is to small for my Nova even though it is a Technatool faceplate. Is there a way to use it? An adapter?

This lathe has a step pulley and a variable speed motor. How can I tell how fast it is turning?

Thanks for any help that you can give the newbie.

Sorry for the picture quality.

Toney,

Looks like you have the Nova 3000, here is the manual of this lathe. See page 17 for speed and there is a window on top showing belt position.
http://www.teknatool.com/products/Lathes/3000/downloads/Nova%203000%20Manual_14%20October%202003.pdf
The faceplate may be for the Nova Mercury mini lathe which has 1" X 8 TPI.
If that is the only item you need a spindle adapter for, I would just sell the faceplate and buy another that fits. An good adapter sells for as much as $60, and it may also introduce some run out. CSUSA is running sales on the faceplate rings.
When you install the woodworm screw, see page 9 of manual for instruction:

Toney,
You will soon be wanting to post pictures of some great looking turnings. To make it easier for us to see them, suggest you do the following. Crop the picture, reduce the maximum dimension to 640 pixels, set the resolution to 300 dpi, then "optimize" the file size to about 100k.

Hey Tony,

"Yes" on the screw chucks. As for the faceplate...I would suggest selling it or giving it away. To replace I would heartily recommend the Nova faceplate rings. They allow you to leave your chuck in place, screw the faceplate to the wood and expand the jaws of your chuckinto the recess on the ring. Sounds more difficult than it is but believe me when I say it is easier than trying to screw a faceplate and 50lb block on to your headstock spindle. I got on at Christmas and will be picking up a couple of more really soon.

Toney,

CSUSA stands for Craft Supplies, USA. It is an outfit in Utah that specializes in selling to woodturners. Packard Supply is another one located in the SE states.
