Kevin... Welcome. Closed stand is better than open stand. More stable, less vibration. What horsepower? Delta made them from 3/4 hp to 1-1/2 hp. More hp is always better. Just something to think about.

Used, bare-bones saws go for more than that around here. Sounds too good to be true, move fast.

Enjoy,

Dave

Nick...I have the Ridgid, and with a little tuning, it can be a great saw. What problems are you having? There is a Ridgid forum with lots of good posts from owners of the Ridgid BS1400. Or I can answer questions about what can be done to fix problems. You just have to remember, its a light-medium duty saw. If you need help with your Ridgid, Lets start a new thread, so we dont hijack this one.

It's a good deal even if it's one of the lower models. If it's got the closed stand, or 1(or more)h.p., then it's a very good deal. As long as it's not been beat up, I think you would be happy with it.

Thanks Lance and everyone for the replies. The Delta is a 3/4 horse motor ,would be my first bandsaw and I thought that it might not be too advanced to work with but good enough to get my feet wet.

Many woodworkers start out with the 14" cast iron saws. They are a great way to learn the basics. They also are very capable machines and lots of people dont ever feel the need to upgrade. You can do lots of good work with that saw. Good luck and have fun.

Before buying you might read what Louis Iturra of Iturra Design has to say about Chinese made Delta bandsaws vs older Delta bandsaws made in the USA. :)

I've had one for about 4 years and so far it has performed flawlessly.

(The only flaw is the operator so far!!!!)

I paid more for mine so sounds good to me.

Before buying you should read what Iturra has to say about Delta bandsaws made in China which is likely where it was made. :)

It's a good point. However, although Iturra would prefer one of the American made saws, I think he still rates the new Delta's pretty high. I've got a 1948 Delta 14" sitting in my shop and it's my best, and most used tool.(Although I want, yearn for, aspire to own, and desparately need a bigger bandsaw.):o

Charles, what is Iturra?

Louis Ittura puts out a bandsaw catalogue. As far as I know he doesn't have a web presence. Somebody can post his phone number, or I'll do it when I get home tonight. His catalogue deals, almost entirely, with 14" Delta and Delta style bandsaws. It reads like a bandsaw primer as much as a catalogue - a wealth of information.

That sounds like a good deal, with the guides/fence/base.

FWIW, I "downgraded" from an 18" to a 14" and use it for almost everything. You'll be very happy with it.

The Delta 14" is pretty much the industry standard. All third-party accessories are available for at least that model.
