As promised here are pics of the finished plane. Specs are as follows, sides 1/4" thick brass, sole 3/8" thick brass, infill wood mahogany, iron 1/4" thick x 2.0 wide" x 7.25" O-1 hardened to R60-62, Lever cap bronze with stainless steel cap screw and stainless steel pins, weight is not determined but I'm guessing about 6 to 6 1/2 lbs, no cap iron.

Thanks for looking,

Ron Brese

Forgive me if you've addressed this in a previous post, but I'm curious about the brass button at the top of the blade...is this to facilitate blade extraction/adjustment?!?

If I remember from one of his previous planes, it's to keep the blade from accidently falling completely through the bottom of the plane when loosening it for adjustment or removal.

Makes the ones made in Maine look rather affordable.:D

Very nice looking plane Ron. Makes my metal working skills look rather id-evil primitive.....

Boy is that pretty! You probably hear people say they would be afraid to use it (my hands would be shaking if I picked it up), but I'm sure you make these planes to use. Beautiful.

Steve,

I had addressed all the comments and questions with the exception of yours. When I posted the pics I had not really had time to do the final tuning and give this plane a go. It was finished Friday night at 10:00 and I was on the road the next morning at 5:00 am (better known as the butt crack of dawn) to the MWTCA meet in Madison, Ga..

I just completed flattening the sole, flattening the back of the iron and honing it to a hair shaving edge and then tuned the lever cap to the back of the iron. As I was building this plane I was really anal about every detail and left no doubt about the accuracy of the individual parts as I was making them. This made tuning the plane quite simple once I had time to commit to doing this task.

All this being done, I have just tested this plane on the board that I use to test the limits of any plane. The board is a walnut board that has a knot in one side which creates switch back grain in the other face of the board and the knot is sizable enough to send the switching grain thru both edges of the board. It is the kind of board that would usually be beyond the ability of most bench planes. This plane cleaned up all the edges and both faces perfectly clean, and I planed each facet in both directions. Even the areas around the knot were smooth as glass.

Ron, ignore my last post asking if you sell your plans, I just looked at your site. You do good work, to say the least.

NO!!! NOT GARY!!!!
Send it to me. Folks in Mississippi don't see works of art (hand made tools) like that.

Very beautiful. How are the sides attached to the sole, or did you machine it out of a solid chunk of brass?
